Proper Music Distribution Limited is the UK music industry's largest totally independent, full-service wholesale music distributor of CD/vinyl and digital formats. The original company formed in 1988 by Malcolm Mills was The Sale People/Cee Dee Sales but changed name to Proper Music Distribution in 1999 following a merger with Direct Distribution. In 2012, Proper is again the holder of the coveted annual MUSIC WEEK AWARD trophy for "Best Distributor" which it also won in 2009 and 2010 against major competition. ABC rated in-house magazine Properganda is circulated at venues, record stores and music festivals as well as being available online.

Proper Records Limited was formed in 1996. Early success was due to the Properbox series which is still going strong and now exceeds 175 titles. These days, the Proper Records label is better known for releasing new albums by contemporary artists such as Nick Lowe, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, Richard Thompson, Nanci Griffith, Gretchen Peters, Dr. John, The Waterboys, Los Lobos, Paul Brady, Loudon Wainwright III, Jacqui Dankworth, Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham and many more. It also has a fully equipped modern studio named Specific Sound.

Proper Note Limited was formed to carry on the sales and services formerly provided by New Note Ltd. Directors Eddie Wilkinson and Graham Griffiths along with all of the key personnel joined the new company in April 2009. All distribution services are carried out by Proper Music Distribution.
